The Alsace-Lorraine region of France is in its north-east corner, bordered by the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest of Germany.
This area’s unique blend of French and German influences is strongly evident in its customs, cuisine, wines, architecture and language. For centuries, the great empires of Europe confronted one another at this strategic and military crossroads.
On your cruise you will discover storybook castles, rolling vineyards of Alsatian wines, as well as Baroque, Gothic, and Romanesque architecture.
Alsace-Lorraine is a famous winemaking region with fruity white wines. It is also the leading region in terms of beer production, producing about 70% of all French beer. Food lovers will relish this region, which has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other region in France.
The Canal du Rhône au Rhin, completed in 1855, is an important watershed canal of the French waterways, connecting the Rhine to the Saône and the Rhône and, therefore, to the North Sea and the Mediterranean.
The Canal de la Marne au Rhin connects the river Marne and the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne with the port of Strasbourg on the Rhine. This canal was designed to connect Paris and the north of France with Alsace-Lorraine, the Rhine, and Germany. The 195-mile canal (313 km) was the longest in France when it opened in 1853.
We represent two French hotel barges (La Nouvelle Etoile and Panache) that offer cruises between Niderviller and Krafft along the Canal de la Marne au Rhin and the Canal du Rhone au Rhin. These waterways flow through steep-sided forested valleys, canal-side villages of half-timbered houses, and feature the amazing Arzviller boat lift which carries the barge sideways 450 feet up the hillside, and several tunnels.
